OUR GOALS

Wemocracy pursues various goals that are suitable for promoting democratic political culture on the national level and for fostering cooperation among democrats internationally. We do this in particular by promoting cooperation between people and between institutions and by exchanging people and ideas for the benefit of democracy and the community. We want to raise people's awareness of the importance and need for protection of our basic democratic and human rights, and we want to strengthen the sense of "we" and the cohesion of people in society. We do this, for example, through events such as symposia and seminars, through project and program work, but also through the production and publication of our own content on political (opinion) formation and current affairs. With offerings whose impact should be measurable where possible and thus capable of continuous improvement.

People should realize that they need to engage constructively for their empowerment – for their interests as well as for their reform ideas and desires. We want to empower people to understand this and to take advantage of it. We want to share ideas and experience on what participation can look like. At the same time, we emphasize that political participation and social participation should be based on mutual respect, tolerance and openness, and in accordance with factual knowledge, as well as in recognition of the fact that democracies, by their very nature, are almost always about compromise. Almost more important than institutional and procedural reforms, however – and to a certain extent as a precondition for them – is the people's own willingness to change.

Change starts with people's individual thinking, by challenging and questioning their own personal worldviews. One of the most central competencies of people in a society must be the ability to change perspectives. This requires not only certain cognitive skills that can be learned, but also and primarily a positive, social, cosmopolitan, tolerant attitude based on mutual respect. This, too, can be learned. This includes the ability to empathize, to be considerate, and the willingness to put oneself in other people's shoes. In this kind of togetherness, sustainable trust can develop, which promotes cohesion, a sense of belonging and, ultimately, the cooperation between people that is necessary for solving problems.

Projects

The efforts of our non-profit organization focus on teaching and promoting the acquisition of democracy skills through the fact-based transfer of knowledge about democratic processes, institutions and norms ("hard skills"), the practice and application of democratic behaviors for a constructive debate culture on- and offline ("soft skills") as well as through the support, organization and moderation of social dialogues on the broad topic of "the future of democracy".

These offerings are implemented in various formats, for example

  • in the development, implementation and monitoring of innovative (inter-social, inter-cultural and inter-generational) model projects, which focus in particular on promoting cooperation, cohesion and a sense of belonging (the "we-feeling") and thus people's trust in each other and in the political system of democracy,
  • interdisciplinary, intercultural and intergenerational symposia, conferences and workshops on the "future of democracy"

and they are strategically flanked by

  • targeted cooperation with individual actors and organizations in the field of democracy promotion and civic education (which have other specific focuses such as combating right-wing radicalism, identifying, combating and/or dealing with fake news and hate speech, such as migration and integration, or with those offering viable concepts for democratic institutional reform)
  • using primarily digital communication channels (social media) to win over young people ( = our future) in particular to democracy.
